The rich ecosystem of the Six Mile Cypress Slough Preserve provides ideal conditions for this species, thriving in the mature cypress and hardwood swamp. Beyond its immediate diet of ants, their varied food sources include wood-boring beetle larvae, wild fruits, berries, and nuts found within these older growth forests. Furthermore, the large nesting cavities they excavate become vital homes for other wildlife, including owls, ducks, and flying squirrels.
