Welcome to Zoo Miami, where the vibrant colors of the tropics come to life. Today, we're highlighting one of our most stunning residents, the Black-naped Oriole. This brilliant yellow bird, with its distinctive broad black stripe passing through the eye, is a true masterpiece of nature's artistry.
Caught in a moment of quiet alertness, the Black-naped Oriole perches on a diagonal branch, its vibrant plumage illuminated by soft daylight. This is no ground-dweller; the Oriole is an arboreal artist, preferring the canopies of trees where it forages for insects and fruits. Occasionally, it indulges in a spot of nectar from flowers, a sweet treat in its diverse diet.
You might spot the Black-naped Oriole either solitarily or in pairs, but don't expect to see it in large flocks. It's a solitary artist, preferring to paint its way through the treetops alone or with a partner. Its vocalizations are as diverse as its diet, including clear, melodious whistles and distinct harsh chattering calls, creating a symphonic harmony in the canopy.
When breeding season arrives, the Black-naped Oriole constructs an intricate cup-shaped nest, carefully placed within a fork of a tree branch and hidden among surrounding leaves. It's a labor of love, much like the Oriole's constant creation of beauty in our Zoo Miami canopies.
Native to a wide range across Asia, including parts of India, Southeast Asia, and Indonesia, the Black-naped Oriole finds its home here in Miami. Thankfully, its global population is stable, currently categorized as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List. But each vibrant call and colorful flight is a reminder of the delicate balance of our natural world.
